Rockingham County Free Clinic Needs Doctors, Volunteers

Posted by: Tracey McCain      7 months ago

Reidsville, NC - A shortage of doctors is forcing the Free Clinic of Rockingham County to close some nights.

The clinic could use at least a dozen more doctors. Right now, the health care facility is open twice a week. Due to the shortage, they've had to turn people away at least two times a month.

Volunteers at the facility help people like Bodi Terry. He's part of the county's 20.4% uninsured. Prescriptions that cost more than $100 at the drug store, he's picking up free picking up free at the South Main Street clinic.

"My wife, she's a patient here. She's been diagnosed twice with arthritis," said Terry. "We're not real rich people. We work for a living but when you don't make a lot its hard to spend a lot," he said.

But a shortage of doctors at the clinic is limiting when and how many people get the help they need.

"Sadly on an average two times a month, we are unable to find a medical health care provider so when that happens obviously we cannot have a medical clinic," said the clinic's executive director, Leslie Deaton. "It's very difficult because when someone is sick, they're sick and they need treatment now. To not have a provider is very frustrating. And what is there option if they have no insurance."

Deaton says one reason for the shortage is a general lack of doctors. "I think it's a challenge because they're so busy. They have very robust practices and patients fill their waiting rooms just like they do ours. For them to come here at 5:30 in the evening is challenging," she said.

Those who rely on the clinic's free help know the challenge and they appreciate the care they get.

"It's a real relief and a burden off both of us," said Terry. "We know that the sponsors and stuff probably pay for the clinic but if it weren't for gracious, God-fearing people like these here, we'd be hurting real bad."

The Free Clinic of Rockingham County is seeking volunteers. Though they need doctors and dentists the most, they also appreciate receptionists and of course monetary donations.

The Free Clinic of Rockingham County is hosting a gala to help support it's health facility. The Snowflake Ball is Saturday February 23, 2008 at the Chinqua Penn Plantation in Reidsville. The cost is $50. There is a silent auction and live entertainment. All proceeds benefit the clinic. Sponsorships are available. Call 349-3220 for more information.

New Partnership to Give Better Access to Local Clinic

The Aging, Disability and Transit Services of Rockingham County is partnering with the Rockingham County Free Clinic to offer free transportation to area residents who have appointments at the clinic but lack methods of transportation.

Rockingham Community Access Transit Services, operated by ADTS, will offer rides on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. To be eligible for the rides, clients must already have made an appointment at the free clinic.

RCATS operates 21 vans that provide door-to-door services.

ADTS is a nonprofit agency that helps provide senior citizens and people with disabilities with access to information and services that might benefit them. Some of their services include Home Health, Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Care and RCATS.

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with the Free Clinic to provide much needed transportation for their clients,” said T. Lee Covington, executive director of Aging, Disability and Transit Services, in a statement. “With additional funds from the North Carolina Department of Transportation … we hope to provide year-round service to people who need to get to the Free Clinic but have no means of transportation.”
