The Free Clinic of Rockingham County opened its doors in May 1998 to a target population of working, uninsured individuals residing within a 6 mile radius of the facility.

The brainchild of retired Reidsville physician Dr. Paul A. Mabe, Jr., The Clinic was truly “community built” as over 130 volunteer workers and area businesses united to turn vision into reality with the completion of a 2800 square foot healthcare facility.

In October 2005, The Clinic’s Board of Directors heeded the cry of the uninsured by expanding the service radius to incorporate all of Rockingham County.

The Clinic is a private, non-profit organization that is without any federal, state, or county funding and is completely dependent upon the generosity of charitable trusts/foundations and private donations from the community.

Staffed almost exclusively by caring volunteer professionals and nonprofessionals, clinics primarily operate on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to accomodate the work schedules of patients and volunteers.

Recently celebrating its eleventh anniversary, The Clinic is the only private organization of its kind in the entire county that affords primary health care to the working uninsured for a nominal administrative fee.

By keeping Clinic patients healthy and employed so that they can support their families and contribute to their local communities results in a ripple effect of economic benefit throughout the entire county.
