On a brisk February evening under a moonlit sky, The Snowflake Ball was unveiled and later heralded as the grandest charitable gala in Rockingham County history. Amidst a whirlwind of party goers, big band sound, fur wraps, dangling snowflakes, and twinkling lights, months of untold hours and tireless energy invested by scores of caring committee members were realized.

Enchanting Chinqua Penn Plantation in Reidsville served as the historic backdrop on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 7:00 to 11:00pm for a magical evening filled with superb food and an extensive silent auction including a Bahamas adventure, beach condos, signed basketballs by Coach K and Roy Williams, gourmet meals, fine jewelry, original paintings, original sculpture, 200 gallons of propane, a smile makeover including 6 porcelain lumineers, golf packages at The Homestead and Primland, and much more.

Dancing to the glorious sounds of Big Band with Penn Family Music and The Swing Machine as well as a special appearance by top award winning Indie Artist, Vaughan Penn, as heard on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Boston Legal’ and ‘Laguna Beach’ was a highlight of the evening festivities.

And the benefactors of the black tie gala? The relieved stock employee at a national retail giant who sits in a Free Clinic dental chair awaiting a much needed extraction; the previously unmanaged diabetic who walks out The Clinic’s door with insulin in hand; and the cashier at a local fast food chain with new peace of mind that only a negative mammogram result can bring.

Despite soaring gas and food prices, a slumping housing market, tighter credit, and a tougher job market, Rockingham County residents, donned in their loveliest attire, ensured that the only free clinic of its kind in the county would remain a viable healthcare resource for a very vulnerable population: the working uninsured. Feel proud to live in a county that refuses to allow a recession diminish its spirit of giving to those who often suffer in silence.
